Chris discovered curling through a love of watching the Olympics and got his start after trying the sport in Sioux Falls. Over the past seven years, he’s helped found two curling clubs in South Dakota and remains passionate about growing the game. He values curling’s inclusivity, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. His advice to newcomers: don’t take it too seriously—just enjoy the game and know you’ll improve every time you play.

Tony has been involved in curling for three years and was inspired by his wife's grandfather, Duane, whose passion for the sport sparked his own. He values curling’s accessibility and the way it brings people together from all walks of life. As a board member, Tony enjoys fostering that community spirit and encourages newcomers to dive in—emphasizing the fun, sportsmanship, and addictive strategy. Outside of curling, he enjoys golfing

Casey Stout

Casey has been curling for three years and is excited to welcome new faces to the sport this season. He appreciates curling’s friendly, inclusive community and encourages newcomers to give it a try—whether solo or with friends. His dream curling destination is Scotland, the birthplace of curling stones, and if given the chance, he’d spend a day as Matthew Berry, talking Fantasy Football nonstop.

Matt has been with Brookings Curling Club since day one, playing in every league over the past three years. He’s passionate about welcoming new players to the sport and enjoys watching teammates grow into new roles. One of his favorite memories is his team’s journey from last place in the fall league to champions in the winter—a testament to perseverance and teamwork. For newcomers, Matt emphasizes the addictive joy of mastering the game’s fundamentals.

Cara has been curling for seven years, first introduced to the sport through a Learn to Curl event in Sioux Falls. Since then, she’s helped found both the Yankton and Brookings Curling Clubs, driven by a passion for building community and making the sport fun and accessible. Cara loves that curling is easy to try but endlessly challenging to master, and she’s dedicated to creating a welcoming space where everyone feels encouraged to give it a shot.

Derek Schmidt

Derek has been curling for two years and joined the board to help Brookings Curling thrive as a lasting part of the community. He’s passionate about getting people of all ages active and having fun through sport. Derek believes joy should come first—encouraging new curlers to embrace the game regardless of skill. His dream is to curl outdoors in the mountains, and if he were a superhero, he’d choose time-manipulation to make every moment count.

Fallon Beck

Fallon has been curling for two years and joined the board to play a more active role in the club’s growth. One of her favorite memories is the six-club bonspiel, a highlight of community and competition. She encourages new curlers to stretch and not fear the ice—it’s less slippery than it looks, and the sport is more physical than many expect.
